The Story Behind the Lens
I made this photograph during a February 2010 road trip through the Florida Keys with my wife. We had set out from Tampa for a few days on the road, heading south toward the Keys and photographing along the way. We stopped at Fort Jefferson to take in some incredible American history. While walking through the grounds, the repetition of the arches immediately caught my eye - creating a natural rhythm that pulls the viewer deeper into the frame.
This is one of the few photographs selected for Lucis Nova that was captured with my Canon 30D. It was a camera I used only briefly before the release of the full-frame Canon 5D Mark II, which quickly became my primary camera. Paired with the 30D was my trusty Canon EF 17–40mm f/4L, used here at 27mm. I stopped down to f/14 at ISO 400, resulting in a 1/10-second exposure.
I ultimately chose to present the photograph in black and white. Removing colour allows the repeating arches, light and shadow to take centre stage, emphasizing the geometry and depth that first drew me to the scene. More than fifteen years later, this image remains a small record of that road trip—and of an earlier chapter in my photography.
